Para-Badminton Tournament

Gold 4-Nations

Last weekend, 3 of the Canterbury Kings Para-Badminton players attended the Gold 4 Nations Para-Badminton Tournament in Worcester.

On Saturday 18th January, the 35 attending players were split into pools of similar ability and then competed within those groups.

Peter was in a group of 6, containing 4 WH (wheelchair classes), 1 SS (short stature) and 1 LD (learning disability) player. They played each other in a singles tournament and Peter came 2nd overall. The doubles tournament followed, which was the best of 3 games, with Leslie and Peter coming 2nd.

Peter said “Playing against WH, SS and LD players gave a big variety in the types of games played. So this hopefully will have added to my playing ability. The first day was certainly the most badminton I have ever played in one session. We started playing soon after 10:00 and apart from about an hour’s break in the middle, we played through until 16:00”.

On Sunday 19th January, fewer players were available. So 5 teams of 6 were formed and each player was seeded. Individuals played in singles and doubles matches against their equivalent seeds of the other teams.

Oliver, Lesley and Peter proudly wore their Canterbury Kings T-shirts and praised Badminton England for the well organised tournament. It gave our players plenty of experience playing in a competitive but friendly atmosphere.

Peter was even asked for his autograph, as he had made it onto the Badminton England posters…
