Yiannis | Competing in Montreal

Centre member Yiannis competed at the World Triathlon Championships in Montreal, coming 13th in his age group of the individual race and 9th in the team relay.

The events took place over the weekend of the 25th & 26th June, with the traveling causing some jet lag and a few rough nights sleep before race day.

The heat was very hot at the beginning of Saturday’s sprint race, with temperatures over 30. Yiannis said that he found some shade before the race but even during the warm up, his legs felt tired probably due to the jet lag still effecting him.

Yiannis said “I came out near the front in the swim, had a great swim the best for a long while. I couldn’t get to the main pack on the bike as I came out transition a few seconds slower than them. So I hammed the bike hard and got into another pack which were catching them for lap one and then they went into transition and I was out on my own for the 2nd lap. I gave it everything on the bike, but then I lost my water bottle after 1 mile so had no water at all. The heat continued to increase which became tough and when I got on to the run, I just couldn’t push on”.

Yiannis reflected on the race, saying “The person who finished in 5th, came out from the swim with me but then settled in the pack for the cycle. If I had stayed with them, maybe I would of been closer to a medal. I am really pleased and happy with the way I raced, coming 13th in my age group and the 1st British male to finish, therefore I have prequalified for next years event”.

With a little better sleep and not feeling to achy from the previous race, Yiannis felt really good and was ready for the relay race. He was first to start in his team, however by the time it started at 11:00 the weather was so hot. Yiannis mentioned “The swim was really hard as it was such a short distance (300m), I had to keep pushing on the bike ride as I was out on my own and the run was tough but I managed to run ok”.

Yiannis was pleased that he had achieved his dream and sporting goals. After the race, Yiannis travelled to Mont Tremblant and Ottawa, where he enjoyed the spectacular views of Canada.
