Disability Badminton Competition

10 Canterbury Kings badminton players competing in Kent’s first ever Disability Badminton Competition at Gillingham’s Medway Park Sports Centre.

Richard Morris, GB Para Badminton coach, and members of the GB Para Badminton team ran the tournament on Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th May 2022.

The para-badminton tournament and coaching experience took place on the Saturday followed by a fun team relay event on the Sunday.

Events that took place, included men’s and women’s singles and doubles across the following disciplines:

  • SS6 – have a short stature due to a genetic condition inc but not limited to achondroplasia.

  • SL3 – must play standing. The player could have impairment in one or both lower limbs and poor walking/running balance.

  • SL4 – second standing class where the player has a lesser impairment compared to sport class SL3. The player could have an impairment in one or both limbs and minimal impairment in walking/running balance.

  • SU5 – Impairment of the upper limbs

  • WH1 – requires a wheelchair to play badminton. Players in this sport Class usually have impairment in both lower limbs and trunk function which affects the core

  • WH2 – could have an impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal or no impairment of the trunk. Has strong core.

  • Players with a Learning Disability

The team embraced the whole experience, with some players receiving gold, silver and bronze medals.
