UK Para Badminton Championships 2022

Players from our Canterbury Kings Para Badminton Team took part in the UK Para Badminton Championship in Sheffield.

The team played amazing, overcoming their nerves and playing with such determination during tight games. One player played an extra game, as their partner was so keen to play, even though his feet were yelling at him to put his “comfy” trainers back on! His partner was in a lot of pain too, but she didn’t let this stop her and she kept on going. The mentality and tenacity of character that was present and in many others during the weekend. Centre member Tora, won a three-game classic 23-21 14-21 21-19, to gain the edge and overall top spot in the SL3 women’s singles.

Arlene, who had broken her racket hand wrist a few weeks before the tournament, played with her non racket hand instead and was an inspiration to all, as this was not going to stop her. Another lady in the team made her some signs to go on the side of the court, so she knew what areas were in for a serve and during play. This kind of thoughtfulness and caring attitude within the team was fabulous.

A young boy of about 11 years old, play against the grown men in his category and never once did he give up or they not give him a game. The support given to the young boy by those off court and the banter to the men he was playing was entertaining and the atmosphere of playing amongst friends was evident.

All players must be assessed and their disability has to come within one of the Badminton England classifications groups, If they don’t meet the criteria, then unfortunately they cannot take part in any tournaments. This is sadly why one of the team, who went along anyway to support the others, was unable to compete. Although, the others Canterbury Kings players asked the organisers if they could stay after the last game of the day and play some games to include her. Their wish to make sure that she had some games and felt included was incredible and as stated by one of our players, “We are a team.”

The Canterbury Kings Team are grateful for the financial support from Kent Badminton Supporters Association and from the Geoff Rofe Memorial Funds, which made it possible for the players to attend the Tournament in Sheffield.
