Aimee’s Charity Run – London Marathon 2022

In October 2022, The King’s School Canterbury staff member Aimee will be running the London Marathon for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Aimee is running the Marathon in memory of her Grandad, who was diagnosed with the illness in June 2016 and sadly lost his battle to Motor Neurone Disease in March 2017. Aimee said “when my Grandad was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, I had little knowledge on the disease and the only way in which I would tell my friends was to say ‘it’s what Stephen Hawkins has’.

Aimee hopes to increase the awareness of the disease, and to help raise funds to support those living with it. The Motor Neurone Disease Association supported her family throughout and supplied her Grandad with a computerised voice enabling him to communicate.

Motor Neurone Disease is a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system, causing muscle weakness, making it hard to grip, walk, speak, swallow and breath. As the condition progresses, walking, speaking, swallowing, and breathing become impossible, Motor Neurone Disease is a life-shorting condition for most people, with the average life expectancy of three years.

As part of Aimee’s training, she will be completing a half marathon every month, with the first one already taken place on Friday 15th April, in which she achieved this in 1 hour 32 minutes.
