Fundraising in memory of Zoe Bromfield

Family and friends of Zoë Bromfield are engaging in various sporting and other initiatives to raise money for blood cancer and other medical charities in her memory.

Zoë was an enthusiastic user of the King’s School Recreation Centre throughout her school years (JKS 2003-2006, LX 2006-2011) and more recently would be seen at classes with mum Katrina on her regular visits home. Zoë suffered a brain haemorrhage in August of last year as a result of an acute and previously undetected leukaemia. She was urgently admitted to intensive care in the Charing Cross Hospital but died 25 days later without recovering consciousness. She was 26 years old.

Blood cancers account for more deaths in the UK than breast cancer or prostate cancer. Early detection is key to achieving positive outcomes, yet research by the Bloodwise blood cancer charity has revealed that almost a third of victims visit a GP three or more times before receiving a diagnosis, and that a further third of all cases are diagnosed for the first time only on an emergency admission to hospital (as was Zoë’s case).  Bloodwise is campaigning to raise awareness and to bring detection rates of blood cancers in to line with those for other cancers.

Zoë’s older brother Olly is undertaking 5 ‘marathon’ (10 km) swims before the end of this year, with a view to attempting a Channel swim next year. The first of these swims was successfully accomplished in November of last year at the Stratford Aquatics Centre, and the remaining four will be open water swims in May, June, August and September. The swims are to raise money for Bloodwise. To support Olly and Bloodwise, visit his Just Giving page.

Meanwhile, a group of 30 of Zoë’s friends and well-wishers will be cycling the 100 mile Prudential RideLondon-Surrey in August to raise money for the Intensive Care Unit at the Charing Cross Hospital who fought to save her life. To donate to this great cause, visit their Virgin Money page.

Here at The King’s School Recreation Centre, you will find a collection pot for the Imperial Health Charity (Charing Cross Hospital), as well as a ‘Name the Bear’ challenge for Bloodwise.

Any and all support for these amazing efforts will be gratefully received; Katrina and Nick will be happy to provide any further information.
